Eagles Out, Owls In

On our last visit to Boca, we discovered that our eagle friends that live across the street were nowhere to be found, and in their place were these two adult great horned owls, and their two babies.

See above, the babies peeking out of the nest.

We were kind of concerned, and wondering what happened, because in our minds, Bald Eagles don't get kicked out of nests.  They seem to me to be the ultimate predator.  Anyway, they were gone, and for two baby owls to be seen, these birds had to have inhabited this nest for a while.

Well it turns out, after a long chat with Doris Mager the Eagle Lady, who pulled up in her camper van the day we were leaving, that great horned owls take over nests wherever and whenever they decide, and there is nothing the other birds can do about it, even a bird as large as the Bald Eagle.  Scroll down this article of Doris, and see her raptor shirt she has on, and imagine the owl shirt she had on when we met her.  She's quite a character, even spent six days living in an eagles nest one year to raise money for the audobon society.

While these owls are so cool to look at, I can't help but be kind of mad that they are such usurpers.  What hogs, can't they make their own nests??

Since they don't appreciate how hard a bird has to work to create these huge nests, they don't often stay long, sometimes leaving after a year to go take over someone else's hard earned nest.  If this is the case, our Eagle friends might be back, or they might build a new nest and stay there.

In the meantime we will just enjoy these new cool birds while they last.

In other news, the blog is now private, so if you know anyone that would like an invite, let me know.

Going Private

After careful thinking, I have decided to take the blog private.  I would love to include you in the private blog if you are a friend, family, or acquaintance (or as long as I know who you are- the more the merrier!) I just don't feel comfortable continuing to put pictures of family and friends all over the blogosphere for anyone to stumble upon.  Please email me at rebecca.m.morris@gmail.com if you would like to continue reading, and I (or blogspot) will send you an email link to the private blog.  I appreciate your understanding in this and I hope you keep reading!  (if I know who you are, that is ;)

Family

After Grandmama's funeral we had out of town family over to my mom's house.  It ended up that a lot of Papa's (my mom's father) family was able to come, so we had an impromptu photo sesh to honor the occasion.  It was fun to see so many of his relatives there, especially his sister, Aunt Nell.  Talking to her was like talking to Papa.  It was a neat memorable night.

Love this Little Guy!

What a funny little  man this baby is turning out to be.

He is very alert, expressive, and ready to catch up with his big brother as soon as possible.

He's all smiles when Raughley is around!

Other things he is doing right now:
-squeezing your fingers
-sucking on his own fingers,
-sticking out his tongue
-Eating 3-4 oz every 3-5 hours, sometimes he takes 5 or 6 oz.
-sleeping (almost) through the night with a 4:00 am (and sometimes 5:00 am) paci break
- smiling, smiling, smiling!
-pushing up with his feet

Happy two months old birthday little baby!

Chili Cookoff

It was another dreary day for the Exceptional Foundation's Chili Cookoff, which I always kind of like because it keeps the crowds at bay.

We found a good spot by a lawn where the kiddies could play, and we pretty much camped out there the whole time.

Raughley seems to really enjoy this event, even trying some chili for once!  (He seemed to like the goldfish at Beers' tent best)

I love having an afternoon to hang out and catch up with my family and friends, and it doesn't happen often.

But when it does I try to quit worrying about all the mundane things going on and focus on the more important aspects of my life.

like little ones sleeping- again!

So for a couple of hours we really relaxed and enjoyed a nice chilly, chili cook off.

Breakfast with Mickey

Last Saturday morning we got to eat breakfast with two celebrities... Mickey and Minnie Mouse!

And while Raughley is at the age where he does not want to sit in characters laps, he certainly talked about the breakfast as if he not only sat in Mickey's lap, but got his phone number and planned a play date as well.

In actuality, this is about as close as we got.

Liam, however, loved miss Minnie.  Slept right through it, in fact.

It was such a cute morning.
